Using weight loss medication during Ramadan

Example Post 3 Image

For many, Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection and community.

However, for those currently on a weight loss journey, it also presents unique practical challenges.

If you are using weight loss medication during Ramadan, you may be wondering how to balance your clinical treatment with the requirements of fasting.

The good news is that for the majority of people, it is entirely possible to continue your treatment safely.

With a few mindful adjustments to your routine, you can maintain your progress while honouring the holy month.

Timing is everything
The most common question regarding weight loss medication during Ramadan is when to take it.

You may need to adjust your schedule to fit within the non-fasting window between sunset (Iftar) and dawn (Suhoor).

To manage potential side effects like nausea, many clinicians recommend administering your dose after Iftar. Having food in your stomach can act as a "buffer," making the medication easier to tolerate.

Prioritising hydration
One of the most significant risks when combining fasting with weight loss drugs is dehydration.

Medications like GLP-1s can actually suppress your sense of thirst as well as your hunger. When you are restricted to drinking only during the night, it is easy to fall behind on your fluid intake.

Aim to drink between 2 and 2.5 litres of water between Iftar and Suhoor.

Avoid relying on caffeinated or sugary drinks, which can lead to energy crashes or further dehydration.

Breaking your fast with water and a few dates is a traditional and medically sound way to rehydrate and stabilise blood sugar levels quickly.

Listen to your body
Ramadan is a marathon, not a sprint.

While your weight loss goals are important, your health must come first. Common side effects—such as nausea, headaches, or fatigue—can feel more intense while fasting.

If you feel significantly unwell, dizzy, or experience signs of low blood sugar, it is important to seek medical advice.

Remember, there are often exemptions from fasting for those with chronic health conditions; if your medication makes fasting physically unsafe, consult with your GP or an Imam to discuss your options.

By planning your meals carefully - focusing on high-fibre, slow-release carbohydrates at Suhoor and lean proteins at Iftar - you can support your body through the fast while continuing to see the benefits of your weight loss treatment.
